Vietnam sets goal to join world's top 30 economies by 2030

Vietnam's economy achieved remarkable momentum during the 2020-2025 period, with GDP expanding from $346 billion to an estimated $510 billion, propelling the country five positions higher to 32nd globally and fourth within ASEAN.
Economic Surge Powers Vietnam's Rise
The government expects 2025 GDP growth to reach 8.3-8.5%, representing the highest rate in the region and among the world's leading performers.[1][2][3][4]
Per capita GDP surged from $3,552 in 2020 to over $5,000 in 2025, officially elevating Vietnam into the upper-middle-income country category. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh, who presented the political report, emphasized that the country achieved or exceeded 22 out of 26 major development targets despite facing unprecedented challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.[5][1]
State budget revenues for 2021-2025 reached an estimated 9.6 trillion Vietnamese dong ($363 billion), exceeding the target by 1.36 times compared to the previous five-year period. The government maintained macroeconomic stability with inflation controlled at approximately 4% annually.[1]
Infrastructure Revolution Transforms Connectivity
The congress highlighted Vietnam's infrastructure breakthrough, with the completion of 3,245 kilometers of expressways by late 2025, surpassing the 3,000-kilometer target. The coastal road network achieved 1,711 kilometers, also exceeding the 1,700-kilometer goal. These developments represent what officials described as a "historic breakthrough" in economic and social infrastructure.[1][2]
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who chairs the Government Party Committee, emphasized that Vietnam is preparing strategic national projects including nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuan province, the North-South high-speed railway, and the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway line.[2][1]
Bold Vision for 2030
For the 2025-2030 period, the Government Party Organization set targets for average GDP growth of at least 10% annually, aiming to achieve per capita GDP of approximately $8,500 by 2030. The ambitious plan envisions Vietnam becoming a developing nation with modern industry and upper-middle income, ranking among the world's top 30 economies and third within ASEAN.[1][2][3]
The digital economy is projected to contribute around 30% of GDP by 2030, while the government plans to complete 5,000 kilometers of expressways nationwide. Vietnam also targets establishing international financial centers in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, along with new-generation free trade zones.[2][1]
According to General Secretary To Lam, who attended the congress, Vietnam now stands at a "historic moment" facing both unprecedented opportunities for rapid development and urgent needs for revolutionary breakthroughs.[4]
